The 30th World Climate Conference (COP30) in Brazil ended over the weekend with sobering results. Although some decisions were made to support poorer countries in dealing with the consequences of climate change, there is still no concrete roadmap for eliminating the cause: the use of fossil fuels.
While the focus of attention has shifted away from climate change at the moment in light of multiple crises, our overall societal problem is becoming more acute: securing our livelihoods.
Living and working sustainably within planetary boundaries
What do we actually want, what do we need to be happy? We want to live well and safely, we want to work well, we want wonderful experiences, adventures, community, delicious and healthy food, and much more – not just today, but tomorrow too. Living and working well in the long term means doing so within planetary boundaries.
That is precisely why sustainability is not a trend, but an attitude. And that is precisely why reducing our corporate carbon footprint (CCF), the CO₂ footprint we leave behind as a company, is very important to us. We have been documenting it since 2016 and have introduced reduction measures. Without any reporting obligation.
First, the good news: since 2021, we have consistently been below 2 tons of CO₂e per FTE (full-time equivalent). This makes us one of the pioneers in our industry. By comparison, consulting firms in Germany are significantly above this average, often emitting between 3 and 5 tons of CO₂e per FTE. We demonstrate that there is room for improvement.
Renunciation, renunciation...
Since the establishment of our CCF, we have adapted the way we work: we also print significantly less and pay attention to waste avoidance, reduce unnecessary consumption, and largely refrain from giving promotional gifts. In addition, we have dissolved our vehicle fleet, reduced company cars to a minimum, avoid flights, travel by train, worked remotely even before Corona, use desk-sharing concepts, and – where possible – decarbonized our properties by switching to green electricity. And are we missing anything? No, nothing.
Because we have community, enjoy working as a team, have personal freedom in organizing our working hours, find inspiration with our customers and business partners, and much more. We see meaning in what we do: we support our customers in achieving their goals and being part of the solution.
And yet: in 2024, our consumption has risen slightly again compared to 2023, both per capita and overall.
Why have our emissions increased? Growth brings new challenges—more staff, more mobility, more working from home, more projects. This is where we see our mission: we will continue to optimize, and we will focus on fossil-free or reduced-fossil heating for new leases.
Our reduction targets are:
🎯 By 2030: reduce 42% of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions (based on SBTi)
🎯 By 2050: reduce 90% of all emissions per FTE (base year 2021)
Our move to RESI, our office building without heating or cooling, is an important milestone in achieving our goals.
Commuting by our employees accounts for a large proportion of emissions in relation to the second target. In this area, we need politicians to create the right conditions in the form of more fossil-free mobility solutions.
From footprint to handprint – what we leave behind
The footprint represents the traces we leave behind with our feet – the emissions and resources we consume through our work. Every step we take has an impact on the climate and the environment.
The handprint, on the other hand, symbolizes the good we build with our hands: solutions that reduce emissions, sustainable buildings, future-proof strategies. With every project, we create a positive impact that goes far beyond our own footprint.
Our approach: Less trampling, more shaping. Less burden, more impact. And best of all: We empower our clients to be part of the solution themselves. Together, we develop concepts that not only transform your organization, but also contribute to society and climate protection.
